In Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, a key public infrastructure project supported by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) has been recognized among the Philippines’ most impactful architectural works, highlighting the role of infrastructure in strengthening inclusive governance in remote and underserved areas.
Implemented under the European Union-funded Support to Bangsamoro Transition Programme (SUBATRA), UNOPS is supporting the construction of critical government facilities across the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), including Offices of the Chief Minister in Tawi-Tawi and Basilan.
As part of this portfolio, the two-storey Office of the Chief Minister located in Barangay Lamion, Bongao, Tawi-Tawi, has been selected for the ARC ICON 100—an प्रतिष्ठious recognition that celebrates design excellence and innovation in architecture across the Philippines.
The project was designed by Dream Architects, whose approach integrates modern functionality with elements inspired by Bangsamoro cultural identity. The design reflects local heritage through the use of traditional architectural features, contributing to both functionality and cultural relevance.
“This recognition highlights the importance of infrastructure in advancing inclusive governance,” said Peter Browne, UNOPS Country Representative. “Improving access to government services in geographically isolated areas remains critical. Together with our partners, we are committed to delivering infrastructure that combines quality, accessibility and cultural sensitivity, supporting stronger regional institutions.”
Architect Daryl S. Balmoria-Garcia of Dream Architects emphasized the collaborative nature of the project: “This recognition would not have been possible without the trust, collaboration and guidance of the UNOPS team. We are grateful to contribute to a project that holds meaningful value for the Bangsamoro commun
